A pair of cast-iron “Poplar” urns on pedestals, manufactured by J.W. Fiske Iron Works, the urns with arabesque handles with rosette flourishes and pointed scalloped rims, the bodies of the urns with acanthus leaf motif, and the fluted socles with modified egg and dart motif at the bases, marked “J.W. FISKE/ NO. 21 & 23/ BARCLAY ST. N.Y.”, on molded square pedestals with inset panels and flared base, American (New York), 1874-1892. 51 ins. high overall; urns 28.5 ins. high, 32.75 ins. wide including handles, 26 ins. diameter of bowl; pedestals 22.5 ins. high, 17.5 ins. square.
J.W. Fiske Iron Works, one of the premier retailers of cast-iron ornamental wares in the mid-to-late nineteenth century, operated in numerous locations in New York City over a period of several decades. Between the years 1874 to 1892, the business was headquartered at 21 & 23 Barclay Street in New York City. The mark on these urns enables us to date them quite precisely.
