Item #06560
A pair of cast-iron campana-form urns with scalloped egg and dart rim, the semi-lobed body of each urn ornamented with leafy rinceaux and arabesques, and with foliate loop handles, each raised on a circular rising socle and integral square base, marked on opposite sides of integral round base “Wood & Perot Makers Philadelphia” and “Chase & Co.”, American (Philadelphia), ca. 1866.
Robert Wood, who founded his renowned cast-iron firm, the Robert Wood foundry, in Philadelphia in 1840, entered into partnership with Elliston Perot in 1858 to form Wood & Perot. The company produced goods under this name until 1866, when Elliston Perot moved to Brooklyn, NY, and Robert Wood continued production as Robert Wood & Co. with new partners Irah Chase and Thomas S. Root. These urns were likely produced right around 1866 when business affairs were in flux, as the urns are marked with the Wood & Perot name as well as the Chase & Co. name.
The foliate pattern on the body of the urns is a rare and unusual one. While this type of urn is often ornamented with foliate rinceaux, this particular pattern incorporates more leaves, more stylized arabesques, and a central spiral rope element not often seen.
30 ins. high, 24 ins. diameter at top, 12 ins. square at base
