Item #06567
A carved marble figure of a faun, standing and playing the flute, the figure’s head tilted to meet the flute held in playing position, with proper left leg crossed in front of the right leg, and with proper left hip leaning slightly upon the adjacent tree stump, the figure partially draped with a lion-pelt cloak tied at the proper right shoulder, the whole on an integral square base, Italian, ca. 1890.
The form, pose, and subject matter of this piece derives from The Faun with Pipes, the 1st-century Roman figure based on a bronze Greek original (the original bronze now lost). The Roman example was owned by the Borghese family and was displayed at the Villa Borghese in Rome as early as 1638. It was then purchased by Napoleon in 1807, along with a majority of Borghese holdings, and installed at the Louvre in 1815. Multiple iterations of this figure were produced, having been much admired by Grand Tour travelers in the 18th and 19th centuries.
